Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that lightens the color of your teeth and helps remove stains and discoloration. It’s one of the most popular treatments for improving the appearance of a smile.

How does it work?

There are two main types of teeth whitening:

  1. In-office whitening

    • Done by a dentist using a high-concentration bleaching agent (usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide).

    • Often enhanced with a special light or laser to accelerate the process.

    • You can see results in just one visit — teeth may become several shades whiter.

  2. At-home whitening

    • Custom trays or whitening kits provided by your dentist.

    • Lower-concentration whitening gel used over a few days or weeks.

    • Results appear more gradually, but still effectively.

What causes teeth to discolor?

  • Coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco

  • Poor dental hygiene

  • Aging (enamel wears down, revealing yellowish dentin)

  • Certain medications or trauma

Is it safe?

Yes, when done under the supervision of a dental professional. Some people may experience temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation, but these effects usually fade shortly after treatment.
